12. Cooling System
The cooling system has grown in little bits along the way, starting with the
water pump and thermostat which were included with the reconditioned engine. I
opted for an electrically operated cooling fan for better efficiency. NG supply
a tailor made radiator together with hoses and an electic fan and switch if
required. It was not possible to fit the radiator, however, until the mounting
brackets were obtained (included with the body kit).
Thermostat Housing
There is more than one type of thermostat housing and I, of course, had the
wrong one. Mine was curved and directed the water towards the left (nearside)
of the car but the correct one (part no. 12H797) is slightly angled and
delivers the water towards the right (offside - see photo).
Heater
A new heater valve and
water return pipe were fitted (both are standard MGB items). A hose
carries the (hot) water from the heater valve to the heater unit and another
carries it back to the return pipe and thus on to the water pump.
The heater unit itself needed
renovation and modification. When I dismantled it I found various bits
of disintegrating foam and evidence that the heater matrix may have been
leaking. Not wanting to risk using it under pressure I purchased a new matrix
together with all the various seals. After painting and re-assembly the heater
was ready to be fitted
to the body.
The heater vents
were fitted later (about the same time as the dashboard) so that I could
experiment where to position them. I also modified the
heater outlet to enable the vent hoses to fit on properly.
Radiator
There are 4 radiator brackets supplied with the body kit. The two inner ones
are straight, fitted as extensions to the two brackets on the
chassis. The two outer ones are cranked to offset the radiator left to
clear the steering column (mine needed some
modification). The
radiator cowl (nose) is fitted by being sandwiched between the inner
and outer brackets.
The hoses were
made up from a long bottom hose which was supplied by NG. I am not sure what
vehicle it was meant for but it doesn't look like an MGB one! I also added a
piece of rubber pipe to the overflow outlet to cleanly carry away any excess
coolant.
The system was filled with coolant (33% anti-freeze mix) before the engine was
started. The capacity was 6.0 litres including a small top up after the engine
had run.
